Pakistani scriptwriter Nasir Adeeb has attracted backlash on social media after he made some unfavourable comments about the veteran actress Reema Khan. The ‘Maula Jatt’ screenwriter was on the Suno Tv’s podcast where he opened up about how he visited the infamous red-light district Heera Mandi to see the actress for a role, and then ended up rejecting her because there was no expression in her eyes.

“We needed two girls for a film, so Younis Malik sahab said we should visit this red light area, and I agreed. We received a lot of protocol from the girl’s mother as we were served tea and refreshments, and then told the girl would come in front of us.”

The scriptwriter recalled how they met the girl, but they ended up not liking her and left. He revealed that later on that girl grew up to become the superstar Reema Khan.

“I didn’t like her because even though she had a sweet voice, there was no expression in her eyes,” revealed Nasir Adeeb. “For an artist, if their eyes are expressionless then there’s no point of working as an actor.”

Since this podcast went viral, many social media users have stepped up to criticise Nasir’s comments about Reema’s past. Celebrities like television show host Rabia Anum called for an end to ‘problematic podcasts’ where people malign the personal lives of celebrities, especially women.

In a statement posted on her Instagram stories she wrote.

“We really need to stop these problematic podcasts..where any random person gets to say whatever they feel like about any celebrity. Just saw a clip and I’m fuming with anger. All I want to say is Reema Khan is an extraordinary person whose transformation is truly unparalleled. She is a wise, intelligent and graceful soul, living a life of respect and dignity. It deeply disturbs me to witness some individuals who, at every opportunity, try to undermine women.

Dear women always remember:

‘When they go low, we go high’-Michelle Obama.”

Kudos to Rabia Anum for showing that only strong women defend other strong women, and really hope that this is a reckoning moment for all of Lollywood to stop bringing up another woman’s past to malign her.
