The internet is in an uproar after the case of the drugging and sexual assault of a 20-year-old Cornell University student in a Chi Phi fraternity house on October 19, 2024, has been reopened. The victim has claimed the investigation was flawed and that the seven accused men received lenient sentences. Tompkins County District Attorney Matthew Van Houten said New York prosecutors will present the case to a grand jury after a formal civil lawsuit was filed on September 16, 2026.
Why is the case reopened?
Attorney Van Houten has stated that, after recovering from the trauma, the victim stated that she was forced to take substances like ketamine, alcohol, and marijuana, after which sexual assault for several hours followed. It was further determined that after she was drugged and raped by 2 men, an open invitation to rape the drugged student was posted on a fraternity house’s Snapchat group, resulting in 5 men further joining the assault. The victim has retrieved her initial statement from November 2024, in which she stated that the substance use and sexual conduct were voluntary and consensual.
What does the lawsuit hold?
While Cornell University Relations Vice President Kyle Kimball has denied the allegations of essay punishments, the prosecution strongly claims that, in the internal investigation, ‘Title XI’ resulted in only two students being expelled, with the rest given minor punishments, such as writing essays and attending workshops. Cornell University has clarified its stance by supporting the reopening of the case and also stated that the Chi Phi fraternity house has been banned from campus since 2024. They posted on X and said:
Cornell University supports the decision of the Tompkins County District Attorney to provide an opportunity for the victim’s story in the 2024 Chi Phi fraternity sexual assault case to be heard by a criminal grand jury.

Upon learning of the gravity of the incident, no criminal proceedings were initiated at the time of the encounter in 2024.
Screenshots from a “Chi Phi Actives” Snapchat group chat have also been added, in which a member allegedly sent a message encouraging others to join.
What triggered public outcry?
The shocking details of the case have sparked an online debate about safety and accountability; Ithaca Mayor Robert Cantelmo has called for a halt to all city-issued special event permits for Cornell student groups in the Common Council resolution. The resolution was passed to ensure the academic institution meets institutional safety requirements.
Hollywood actress Florence Pugh took to Instagram and expressed her rage over the case; she stated that those ripping away human souls are not given the right punishments. She added that sexual assault is not a women’s issue, but rather a human issue; she posted to Instagram:
Netizens have also expressed grief and anger over the ongoing case; they said that if you are not part of the crime, being a witness to it and not reacting makes you part of it as well. Stating how men enabled a crime for other men, a user posted:
yes the Cornell rape incident is horrible, but a more overlooked sinister detail is that they advertised it in a group chat and NONE of the guys reported it or stopped them. Men enable men.

Sharing personal experience, another user stated that the university deliberately brushed it under the carpet; they posted:
When I reported a boy sexually harassing me at school, my Mother went in to speak to the deputy head and another teacher, both men. They physically cornered her and insisted there was no need to take things further.
This attitude is why the Cornell rapists got away with it.

Naming the seven men involved in the rape of the 20-year-old, another user added:
The Cornell University r@pist. These men drugged a young woman and took turns r@ping her. In a group chat, they took a picture of her and invited others to rape her. Only two of them were expelled the others had to write an essay. You should be outraged by the outcome. This… pic.twitter.com/jXT5QAz3LJ

Hoping for extreme punishments for the men, another added:
Someone told me I shouldn’t help spread pictures of the Cornell 7 guys, because it might destroy their lives.
