Post-partum depression is real, and these celebrities are shattering the silence surrounding it

Let’s make it clear: motherhood is not an easy ride. Your body changes, you’re suddenly responsible for taking care of a human being. Your friends and family members change their demeanour with you. It’s not an easy journey because society definitely has not reached the point to realise that motherhood is an incredibly difficult responsibility, and one that is completely unpaid.

We’re glad that more female celebrities are stepping up today to break the illusion demanding mothers to be perfect and ready all the time. Many of them have discussed their experience in dealing with post-partum depression, and how important it is to seek help from others. Many celebrities have been candid about dealing with mental health issues that comes with bearing so much responsibility, and how important it is for family members to be incredibly supportive to someone who has become a mother for the first time.

Minal Khan was at a podcast with Amna Haider Isani where she spoke up about experiencing mom guilt, and how having a supportive family was able to help ease her burden so she could focus on herself.

She discussed how difficult her pregnancy was, and urged Pakistanis to be supportive to the women in their lives who were becoming mothers for the first time.

Zara Noor Abbas says post-partum depression is real, urges mothers to take a step back from being a super soldier

Actress Zara Noor Abbas gave birth to her daughter in July. In a lengthy post on her Instagram account, she urged new mothers to prioritise their bodies and take as much rest they need to recover.

“Accept help. Rest. Eat. Sleep. Nap. You can tell people to let you be. Don’t take the advices that you don’t like. Swaddle like you like it. Nurse or feed- it’s all UPTO you. Do as you please,” the actress wrote.

We’re so happy that the stigma surrounding motherhood is breaking down, and more women are being told that they don’t need to be perfect all the time. Post-partum depression is a serious condition that around 63 per cent of Pakistani mothers are suffering from. It can have a devastating impact not only on the mother, but also on the child, so it’s incredibly important that more families are aware about how serious this condition is.
