Pakistani model and film actress Sarwat Gilani recently gives her two cents on raising sons, and how society’s definitions of men needing to be ‘rough and tough’ and practical instead of emotional often ends up negatively affecting their personality.

In a social media post published to her Instagram, Sarwat shared a picture which read “You’re not just raising your son.. you’re raising somebody’s Husband & somebody’s father. Raise him well.”

Underneath the picture, the actress added a long caption explaining her take on parenting sons saying, “Societal norms can impact sons in various ways. Expectations around masculinity, like being tough, suppressing emotions, or avoiding vulnerability, can influence how boys perceive themselves and others. These norms might limit their emotional expression, shape their behavior, or define their interests based on societal standards, affecting their self-image and relationships.”

Calling on mothers to be ‘compassionate and empathetic’ while bringing up their boys, she wrote that we should try and not have ‘society set examples of what and who they should be’. She added “Our young ones will become partners and parents one day InshaAllah, the change we want to see in the world will have to start at home.”
