Trigger warning: this article will discuss instances of verbal abuse, physical violence towards women

Sunn Mere Dil once again features the disgusting ‘do takke ki’ dialogue in the recently aired episode 26.

Episode 26 of the Geo drama ‘Sunn Mere Dil’ took a tragic turn as the audience and Sadaf both realise that Ammar has turned out to become an even more horrible person than before.

Sunn Mere Dill airs on Geo on Wednesday and Thursday at 8 pm. It stars Maya Ali and Wahaj Ali as two people from opposite backgrounds who set aside their previous misunderstandings to fall in love with each other.

For anyone who needs a small recap, Maya plays Sadaf, a woman from a working class background whose boss Bilal Abdullah (played by Wahaj) becomes infatuated with her. But because of his past drinking and gambling addiction, she rejects him and instead chooses to marry her longtime best friend Ammar (played by Usama Khan). At first, Bilal is heartbroken by the rejection but he still chooses to support the couple by paying for Sadaf’s younger brother’s cancer treatment, and offers Ammar a promotion at his workplace.

The couple’s marriage was already on the rocks as Ammar began spending more time with Dania (played by Ammar Khan) after his wedding and resorted towards drinking and coming home late. But what accelerated the fight in this episode was when he finds out that Bilal Abdullah rescinded his promotion offer from him and instead gave it to Sadaf. At night, Ammar comes home late and taunts her for having silent feelings for her boss, while being married to another man at the same time. When Sadaf retaliates and criticises him for spending more time with Dania, Ammar calls her the hideous ‘do takke ki’ insult and slaps her.

Suffice to say, there were several problematic things that had already went on in the drama like how Ammar tried to commit suicide twice after Sadaf’s rejects him, but this scene takes the cake. We are shocked that after even so much outrage, the script writer Khalil Ur Rehman Qamar chose to once more use such an awful insult like ‘do take ki aurat’ in his dramas. The last time he used this insult was in his drama ‘Mere Pass Tum Ho’ which got extreme criticism from activists and social media users alike because such toxic shows only lead to normalising domestic abuse towards women.

But now, instead of learning the lesson, Khalil Ur Rehman is back to using the same gross tactics on screen, but is also now showing women being slapped? The worst thing is that this is a star-studded cast featuring big names like Maya Ali, Wahaj, Hira Mani and Saba Hamid. We are aware of the fact that all of these actors hold immense influence and followings on their social media channels, so wasn’t it right that they stepped into cut out such a controversial dialogue, knowing that it wasn’t appropriate?

Just like social media users, we’re hoping that in the upcoming episodes, Sadaf chooses to prioritise her safety and self-worth and actually leaves the abusive marriage.
