Mawra Hocane reveals during interview that several actresses reached out to her about suffering from domestic violence after they had watched ‘Jaffa’

Mawra Hocane is truly the real example of what a girl’s girl is!

The actress was a guest on the Youtube channel Something Haute where she opened up about her decision to play ‘Jafaa’. Mawra reflected on how playing Dr Zara, a gyneacologist who suffers from domestic violence at the hands of her husband, had inspired many women to understand the dangers of domestic violence and why it is important to leave abusive marriages.

She made a poignant revelation that aside from users on social media, several actresses within the entertainment industry had also reached out to her after watching the drama and revealed that they had also undergone domestic violence within their homes.

“People I have known in the industry have reached out to me and told me that they’re suffering from domestic abuse,” confessed the ‘Nauroz’ actress. “And these are people we have all known as very strong, powerful women whom no one can dare cross.”

Mawra reflected why playing a character like Dr Zara today on Pakistani television screens was so incredibly important because it showed that even the strongest woman needs help when she is trapped in abusive situations.

“We had to show that despite being a doctor, being financially independent, you cannot be safe from domestic violence even though these things might help with your recovery process. But it’s not the truth that strong, independent and self-sufficient women don’t suffer from violence.”

Mawra said she felt proud of her work on ‘Jafaa’ if it meant that other women who were her colleagues within the industry found it easy to open up about their own personal turmoil “They felt that I could empathize with their pain, which felt like a great achievement to me.”

We’re incredibly happy to see actresses today like Mawra, who make incredibly conscious choices to pick scripts that would resonate with what women in Pakistan actually want. Her portrayal as Dr Zara in ‘Jaffa’ is exceptional because it showed how it was no woman’s responsibility to fix a broken marriage. Also, ‘Jafaa’ did an amazing job at proving how domestic violence doesn’t differentiate between successful or unsuccessful women, but it can happen to everyone because of the way the patriarchy never holds men accountable for their actions.
