Syra Yousuf opens up about society’s evolving perceptions towards divorce and single mothers
Actress and model Syra Yousuf was a guest on the Mashion podcast where she opened up about being a single mother, and discussed how society’s perception towards unmarried or divorced mothers had now evolved. She said that now, society has started to become more accepting towards single mothers.
The actress was previously married to actor Shahroz Sabzwari with whom she shares a daughter. The couple divorced in 2020 and spoke about how they both maintained a cordial relation in order to remain better parents to their child.
“Divorce rates have gone up, and now I feel like more elderly people have begun understanding that it isn’t easy for someone to end a marriage and start all over again…Society, I think does at some extent push young women to not end up alone…But I feel that now people have become more accepting of single mothers not settling for anyone.”
Syra Yousuf urged women, especially mothers, to teach their daughters about the importance of financial independence
In the podcast, the ‘Mera Naseeb’ actress stressed on the importance of women prioritising their financial independence above everything else in their life. Especially for mothers with young daughters, Syra stressed that it was important for them to understand that you don’t need a man in your life to get everything you need.
“You can’t make any decision in life without being financially independent which is why it is so important. And also being a mother to a girl, it is so important that we set such an example that I was able to make such decisions because I was financially independent.”
When the conversation shifted to the rise of dating apps like Muzz, where both men and women could be transparent about their previous relationships and marriages, Syra Yousuf brought up how divorced women were pressured into hiding their failed marriages in order to get married for the second time. The ‘Babylicious’ actress recounted how she had witnessed several women who were forced to abandon their kids when they got married for the second time and moved in-to their in-laws home.
“I find that heartbreaking” spoke the actress. “Because I’m like I’m sorry but why? You can start your second life with your child.”
