In a recent development, the Sindh High Court has ordered the police to protect a couple who married of their own free will in Jacobabad, ARY News reported. The petition was filed when an abduction case was filed against the man, and threats were made. According to the High Court, the petitioner woman is an adult, married of her own free will, and has urged the Investigation Officer (IO) to submit a detailed report of the case to the magisterate. The police have stated that legal action will be taken against those harassing the couple.
The rift began when, on May 5, 2026, Sidra Channa and Muhammad Hassan allegedly eloped and got married; the woman’s family filed a case of abduction, and a petition was filed in the Larkana Bench of the Sindh High Court for her return. While both parties are to present themselves before the court on June 5, 2026, the court has granted protection based on a video statement by the newlyweds, who declared themselves unsafe. Naming the accused harassers, Sidra stated that she is being pressurised to go back home; her life is in danger if she does. She added that they are forced to live in fear and panic, confined inside a house. Hassan emphasised that they remain unsafe and should be shielded by the law.
The video plea was recorded when a raging mob of 400 people attacked the village of Muhammad Hassan and burned down more than 100 homes of the Buriro community. In response, more than 30 people were arrested, and the Chief Minister of Sindh ordered relief for the affected families.
