Famed PTI politician Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan recently appeared in an interview with host Nida Yasir where she shared her journey as the first girl child in the family to go to school, primary, high school, college and then even medical college.

Dr Awan talked about how her cousins and other females in the family were not even allowed to go to school since such was the tradition on her father’s side of the family. However, she attributed credit for her education to her mother who had been passionately devoted and dedicated to educating her daughters.

Despite my mother and father being completely uneducated, my mother’s vision, orientation and upbringing were more than that of a PhD even, said Firdous Awan, a physician and politician.

Hailing from an educated background my mother broke the system on my father’s side of the family, and broke the earlier social barriers. In a family where young grooms were given money just so their daughters could be married off at an early age, her education was faced with alot of resistance and pressures, she said.
