A survey conducted by Gallup Pakistan concluded that more women are aware of divorces of family members or acquaintances than men.
The survey was conducted over more than 400 people across the country, and the results showed that over one in five Pakistanis had known someone within their family or through their friends who had received a divorce.
According to Geo, over 20 per cent of Pakistanis interviewed in the survey had responded that they knew someone who had gotten divorced in the last six months, while 70 per cent said they did not know anyone who had been divorced.
The survey also revealed that 22 per cent of women were more aware of the family members or friends who had been divorced. While in contrast, among men it was 19 per cent.
More news reports in the last year have shown that divorce rates have risen astronomically within Pakistan.
According to Express Tribune, in 2024 Punjab had seen a 35 per cent rise in divorce rates across the province, with Lahore showing the highest ration. The data obtained by the publication also showed that 25 per cent of women were more likely to initiate the divorce than men.
In 2022, Tribune reported that there was an alarming rise of divorce rates seen in Gujranwala, with over 5,500 cases filed for the dissolution of marriage in family courts.
In 2021 more women on X (formerly known as Twitter) began sharing their reasons why the divorce rates were rising within Pakistan, among which the majority pointed out that more women were more aware about their financial and legal rights than previously.
