Actress Saima Qureshi has been in hot water for the past few days after a short clip from her interview with FHM Pakistan went viral where she was said there was no prosperity in a woman’s earning, and also said that no man needed permission from his wife to get married for the second time.

The actress had defended her comments in a video posted on her Instagram after intense backlash, where she explained that while she said there was no value in a woman’s earning, she was absolutely not against women working and being financially independent.

Television host and journalist Reham Khan had posted a video on her Instagram account where she criticised Saima’s misogynist take, and said her take was an insult towards those women who had no choice but to make a living themselves in order to survive.

“Your words were an insult towards women who had no choice but to make a living on their own instead of waiting for a man to provide for them. And I am shocked at the hypocrisy after she said that a woman complains about earning. My sister, even a man complains about his earnings and work.”

Among the people who criticised Saima Qureshi’s misogynist takes was also the veteran actress Simi Raheal, who shared a verse on her Instagram stories and stressed that even powerful women like Hazrat Khadija was a businesswoman when she married Hazrat Muhammad (P.B.U.H).

We have to say that we’re shocked that even in this day and age, there are such people going around claiming that there is no prosperity brought with a woman’s earning. As a celebrity with a platform, we implore Saima Qureshi to do better and to be mindful of what she says in interviews. Women have every right to make a living and be financially independent, and we have witnessed time and time again how it is only a woman’s earnings that have helped a family prosper rather than a man’s.
