Mahira Khan speaks up about dealing with depression
Pakistani superstar Mahira Khan was a guest on a podcast where she opened up about dealing with mental health issues, and how she got out of an incredibly dark place in her life with the help of her community.
The ‘Verna’ actress reflected on how incredibly hard it is for someone with depression to find positivity in the darkest times of their life, when they find it incredibly hard to even get out of bed.
“People used to tell me when I was really, really depressed, like it was dark for me, that look at all that you have! Look at who you are, look at what your life is. It didn’t register with me because that’s not what you say to someone. Because they can’t help it. It’s a disease, it’s a chemical imbalance.”
Mahira reflected that the thing that helped her deal with the depression she was going through was medication, and the other thing was her support system including her relationship with Allah.
“You need that,” urged the ‘Humsafar’ actress. “You need to hold someone’s hand…My best friends didn’t leave me. They’d be so scared to leave me alone. My father, my brother, my mother, Azu.”
Mahira Khan stresses why it’s important to stop the shame surrounding discussing issues like mental health
Mahira Khan stressed on how important it was for people to start detaching shame from mental health, and to start seeking out support groups where they will find people who have dealt with similar issues.
“I’ve had so many people come up to me and say thank you and then ask me what did I do or where did I go? The amount of people I have sent to different therapists or psychiatrists is insane.”
Mahira urged people to learn to recognise when their body is in pain, they must go see a mental health counsellor who could provide them with the right solution.
Mahira Khan previously opened up about dealing with manic depression at the FWhy podcast with Frieha Altaf where she spoke about how she sought out mental health resources, along with the support of her family and friends to deal with it.
