Renowned Indian director Sanjay Leela Bhansali is making a movie on Lahore’s infamous Red light area titled Heera Mandi. While no news regarding the shoot has been made yet news surrounding the casting is already making news. Many names including Alia Bhatt and Deepika Padukone have been doing the rounds.
Our very own Mansha Pasha has however expressed concern over our heritage being monetized by the neighbor country. In a tweet the Laal Kabootar actor said “India is making a film on Lahore and the infamous Heera Mandi of yesteryears. Because we live in a country where fictional narrative is often censored and everyone keeps arguing about what is or isnt “morally acceptable” fiction, others make most of the opportunity taking up the…taking up the stories that are native to our country, brand them and sell them to the rest of the world. In the end what will be left will be our stories told from someone elses mouth.
Sad.”
Mansha Pasha is extending the narrative that culture is fluid and while our system is always debating over the moral issue, others are using this as a an opportunity to monetize the stories that belong to our own land.
