Yumna Zaidi is back at it again with another gripping drama with a head-strong female lead who has to battle against all odds to achieve her dream to become a lawyer.

We know that every time a drama has Yumna Zaidi starring in it, it’s going to be a phenomenal story that will portray fiercely empowered women who have dreams, and willing to do anything to achieve them. Think back to dramas like Parizaad, Dil Na Umeed Tou Nahi, or even ‘Sinf-e-Ahan’. All of these dramas reverted the traditional gender stereotypes and featured women with complex personalities and who never let anything step in the way of what they wanted.

In ‘Qarz e Jaan’, Yumna stars as Nashwa, a woman who aspires to enter into the legal profession despite her conservative family’s objection. Her father passed away a few years ago, and she along with her mother Bisma (played by the striking Tazeen Hussain) live with her chachu and grandmother.

The first episode opens with Nashwa finding out that she has topped in all of her final exams, and acknowledges how it was her mother’s prayers and gentle guidance that brought her to this path. Many fans shared the wholesome scene where Nashwa strikes out her last name from the list of toppers, and writes her mother’s name in place.

Nashwa and Bisma’s relationship was the heart of the episode that deeply moved me. How often have we seen such positive depictions of mother-daughter relationships in Pakistani dramas, where the mother is someone who actually acknowledges her daughter’s dreams rather than suppressing them?

The bond between Tazeen and Yumna feels incredibly natural, and absolutely makes me want to root for both of them to survive the challenges that are about to come ahead.

Fans had to point out a small but significant connection between ‘Tere Bin’ and ‘Qarz e Jaan’ because Meerub wanted to become a lawyer but was denied the permission because of her marriage. But in this universe, Nashwa studies law in her university and is prepared to achieve her dream and become a lawyer.

Some of the fans praised Yumna’s ability to pick up the projects that feature strong-willed women, and men who respect and encourage them to follow their dreams rather than standing in between them.
