Rano, a brown bear living in the Karachi Zoo, has been relocated to Islamabad due to distressing life reported by Express News. A committee conducted a detailed inspection of her behaviour, training and physical and mental health. Rano was safely moved to Islamabad under the supervision of the Islamabad Wildlife Management Board, along, Mahera Omar, a committee member and filmmaker.

The brown bear was first moved to Faisal Airbase in Karachi, from where she was airlifted to Islamabad earlier today. A Pakistan Air Force C-130 Cargo carried her, and it is being said that she will eventually be moved to Gilgit Baltistan after assessments.

The Sindh High Court ordered the Karachi Zoo management to hand over Rano to the Islamabad Wildlife Management Board as a result of a petition against the zoo on October 14, 2025. The petitioner’s lawyer informed the court that the female bear had been confined for 7 years. She had developed worms in her head due to a lack of hygiene and kept banging her head against the cage, showing clear signs of stress.

The Sindh High Court has criticised the Karachi Zoo management for failing to meet the animals’ needs under their care. They questioned why Rano was kept in such a condition and why they were waiting for a court order to take any action for the bear’s health. The court also questioned why the zoo management does not perform its duties independently.
