We know we’ve been hit by the worst floods since the 1988 floods in River Ravi due to heavy rains and a sudden release of floodgates from India. The situation in Chenab and Sutlej Rivers also remains exceptionally dangerous.
The death toll from Pakistan floods is above 800 so far which expected to increase over the following days due heavier inflow of water from India causing grave concern, as Dawn reported.
The PDMA has notified that there is a rising danger of flooding in Punjab as “there was a record increase in river waters due to rains in the northern areas”.
Barriers have been breached on various areas like head Qadirabad to mitigate the flooding in River Chenab.
The authorities have also warned that the high flood in Ravi at Jassar was expected to pass through Lahore and Shahdara tonight between 10pm and 12am.
The authorities have also warned that the Reports from disaster management authorities also state that low-lying areas near Lahore, including Shahdara, Park View and Motorway-2, were at risk.
32,500 people have been evacuated from flood plains around the Ravi, Sutlej and Chenab rivers.
NDMA warns that people living along the banks of River Ravi & its associated Nullahs need to be aware of expected increase of water flows.
There are dozens of new societies that have been developed recently along the banks of Ravi that are at risk of being flooded including New Metro City and Al-Rehman Garden.
Here are some saftey tips for general public to avoid mishaps:
- Inhabitants of low-lying areas adjacents to the rivers are especially at high-risk and must evacuate immediately.
- Avoid movement along canals, nullahs and flooded roads generally any place that may be over whelmed with water.
- An emergency kit should be kept handy including water, dry food items, medicine and important documents.
