Pamaal has struck again with another important question: how does a mother push you into accepting an abusive marriage?  In the latest episode, the fears of mothers trickle down, becoming a trap for daughters. Malika(Saba Qamar) is one of those daughters who seek support but are only met with blame from her mother.

Malika has unknowingly befriended a neighbour of ill character and is caught by the police in a raid at her house. She is traumatised and apologises to her husband for her mistake; however, Raza (Usman Mukhtar) leaves her at her mother’s house.

There she met with a mother with uncontrollable emotions who is unable to find any sympathy for her scared daughter. The mother only questions her daughter about what she had done to ruin her relationship with her husband. She shouts, she wails and tells her how she has dishonoured her husband. She tells her how she has sinned, and now she will not be taken back by Raza, as a man would never accept a woman who has put his name to shame.

The powerful scenes look directly into the deep-rooted misogyny that is embedded in women of our society. It shows how her mother’s fears and insecurities are affecting Malika’s state of mind. She is unable to identify the abuse by Raza and puts herself at fault.

Viewers can identify the crass mindset and understand how it impacts relationships; Mahwash Ajaz wrote:

They can also see how Malika’s actions result from the reactions she gets from her mother and husband. She expected to be at her best; she lacks confidence, and her lack of exposure makes her judgment foggy. Another viewer commented:

While her mother’s reaction has enraged viewers, her uncle’s has restored trust in empathy. His support for Malika in this time of distress underscores the importance of male characters who are supportive.  A viewer commented:
