For children living in the shadow of strict households, home often feels less like a safe haven and more like a prison. When parents carry unhealed trauma or deep regret from their youth, they frequently pass that weight down to their offspring. Instead of receiving guidance and protection, children end up being crushed under the heavy burden of mistakes they never made. This exact, heartbreaking dynamic is at the core of Hurmat’s reality, where a father’s (Akram-Ali Tahir) past shame directly robs his daughter of her present and future.
For Hurmat (Dananeer Mobeen) marriage has become the only visible escape from a suffocating environment, yet her heart still longs for normal connections. With the help of her friends, she manages to steal small moments with Tabish (Shahveer Jafry). However, the momentary happiness of a day well spent is instantly crushed the second she steps back into her house. The simple, innocent act of humming a song is enough to trigger a terrifying outburst from her father, who grabs her by the neck in a desperate effort to force her into absolute silence. What he fails to realize is that every attempt to choke her voice only fuels her rebellion and sharpens her desire for freedom.

Her father’s extreme need for control does not come from a place of care, but from his own unresolved past. Years ago, he abandoned a promising hockey career after falling obsessively in love with a courtesan. He spent his days waiting outside her door, a reckless madness that ultimately destroyed his reputation, ruined his livelihood, and left him begging for forgiveness from Allah. Instead of coming to terms with his own failure, he has brought those old ghosts home with him. Terrified that history will repeat itself, he seals his wife and daughter inside the house, forbidding them from even making eye contact with others out of fear that a single glance will trigger a similar disaster.
Hurmat is forced to pay the ultimate price for her father’s lingering fears and self-inflicted shame. He does not see her as a young woman trying to live her life, but as a ticking time bomb capable of bringing back his own disgrace. Every basic element of her youth like laughing or simply humming a tune, is misconstrued as a step toward ruin. By projecting his own guilty conscience onto his daughter, he turns his paranoia into her punishment, trapping her in a cage built entirely out of his past.
Netizens have picked up on how Akram continues to inflict pain onto his daughter because he is unable to make peace with his past. Questioning how he is hitting his daughter for simply humming a song, a user posted:
Ugh, she was just humming a song and her father started beating her…like man, THAT’S YOUR OWN DAUGHTER, how can you even treat her like this 😭.
