The latest episode of Biryani has found its masala, as recent episodes dive into the marriage of Meeran (Khushhal Khan) and Gul Mehr (Sarwat Gillani). The confrontation between the couple and their parents was long overdue, and fear took over Gul, leaving her unable to reveal the true reason they had not given the family an heir.
Meeran finally comes forward with his inability to produce a child by confirming that the couple had not consummated their marriage. The two were healthy and did not require the medical and spiritual treatment they had been given for 5 years. He turned down the proposal of a second marriage, saying that this marriage would have the same consequences.

Despite Meeran holding the ground, the conversation turns to Gul Mehr, who was 23 at the time of the marriage and could decline the proposal due to maturity and understanding. Gul elegantly delves into how women are bound in the shackles of safety and security and left with no choice but to marry their cousins. They are expected to respect the culture and traditions and to keep the family lineage within the household. Their free will and well-being are never a priority, but the family’s name, honour and heritage are.

The torment of the couple echoes, where Gul is met with accusations of adultery, and Meeran is given a clean slate because of his age at the time of the marriage. However, Meeran comes forward to defend Gul by bringing his relationship with Nissa to light despite being married to Gul. He states that the allegations against Gul are baseless, but his character may be scrutinised for his alleged lack of loyalty to his “wife”.

Where Meeran and Gul are told to adjust and accept their relationship like all the previous generations, Meeran shuts it down by saying that this trauma would end with him. Gul and Meeran refuse to suffer the way their ancestors did by accepting partners in marriage with whom they had shared a sibling bond. He said that not everyone can accept a woman as their wife whom they had been referring to as “sister” all their lives.
The final revelation of Gul’s age justifies the couple’s relationship dynamics; it highlights her urge to mother Meeran and his inability to see her as anything other than a sister. The audience applauds how the Meeran-Gul duo has been done justice. A user posted on X:
The age thing also cleared up today. Gul was 23 when she got married which means Meeran was 18 since they’ve been married for 5 years. Barely legal.
This is something the story and their dynamic always showed 🤌🏼#biryani #khushhalkhan #ramshakhan pic.twitter.com/G2tyZTMamE

The way Meeran stood up for Gul when her loyalty to Meeran and her marriage was questioned has also won acclaim. Calling Meeran a self-aware protagonist, a user posted on X:
LOVE that Meeran brought up his affair w Nissa when Baba Saain was implying an affair to Gul. The nerve on Baba Saain! But Meeru deflected, letting him know it was his son in the wrong & not Gul 🫶🏽🫠
I love a self aware protagonist 😮💨❤️ @Khushhalistaken #biryani #khushhalkhan

His clear refusal to fall for the same trap as his ancestors, Meeran, again won the hearts of the fans. A user posted on X:
LOVE how Meeran stood up for Gul & said how he’s not one of those men who’d call someone sister one day only to turn into their husband the next. And how it’s NEVER going to happen between him and Gul or any XYZ his parents decide to get him married to 🔥 #biryani #khushhalkhan pic.twitter.com/yPlvZC8zBr
