Trigger warning: distressing content, violence against women

The ARY drama ‘Parwarish’s recent episode received praises from social media users for how Maya’s mother stood by her against her dad and fiance’s false allegations, after enduring his controlling nature for so long.

Parwarish had already received positive responses from audiences since it began airing for how it tackled issues like forced marriages, parental pressure, sexism in families. But this recent episode was applauded for how it sent an important message for mothers help their daughter break the cycle of oppression by standing up to their husbands and the entire world.

For those who are just hearing about this show, it stars Aina Asif as Maya, a headstrong and studious girl who wishes to become a doctor but because of her father’s pressure she is pushed into getting engaged to Waleed, someone she doesn’t like. Samar Jafri stars as Wali, an expat from America who comes to Karachi with his family and secretly wishes to become a musician but hides it because his father wants him to become a doctor.

In this episode, Maya’s fiance Waleed takes his controlling nature to a new level when he discovers the budding romance between her and Wali, and tries to drag her away. In response, Wali beats him up, so Waleed calls Maya’s father and ends the engagement.

When Maya’s father arrives home to beat up Maya, it’s her mother who finally takes a stand for after a long time, and tells him that he had no right to impose his decisions over his daughter when she had a dream to become a doctor rather than marrying Waleed.

Users shared clips of the scene on social media, applauding ‘Parwarish’ for sending an important message about how strong mother-daughter bonds are that it can help break the cycle of abuse and patriarchal control.

“Uffff what a scene, what an acting by Maya’s mother…the way she stood up for her daughter and became that protective wall in front of her maniac husband. So glad that she finally supported her daughter…i had Maya’s dialogue from the previous episode echo in my ear “aap meri ammi hain, mein aap ki ammi nahi hoon!” wrote a user under the episode.

“Standing ovation for all the actors,” another user wrote.

Many users pointed out that the scene was incredibly relatable for them because in typical desi households, mothers are forced to remain silent under the orders of their husband and are helpless to change the fates their daughters are bound to.
