A petition has been filed in the Lahore High Court seeking to impose a ban on the use of social media by children under the age of sixteen, Samaa reported. The petition cited concerns over the growing impact of social media on the teenagers’ mental, moral, and educational development. The petitioner, Alia Saleem, an eighth-grade student, submitted her plea through her lawyer, Sheeza. The petition named the federal government, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), and other relevant authorities as respondents.
The petition argued that unchecked access to social media platforms is exposing young users to harmful content and contributing to a rise in psychological and behavioural issues among minors. Alia stated that excessive screen time and social media dependency are negatively affecting children’s concentration, academic performance, and overall personality development. Its also argued that early and uncontrolled exposure to digital platforms can lead to anxiety, depression, and reduced social interaction in real life and may have long-term consequences for children’s emotional well-being and future prospects.
Weighing in on the state’s constitutional obligation to safeguard the fundamental rights of children, the petitioner urged the court to direct relevant authorities to impose effective regulations and policies. The petitioner added that the state should ensure a healthy environment that supports proper physical, mental, and moral growth.
