Barbie is taking another step toward real-world representation-this time by introducing a doll with Type 1 diabetes. Yep, Mattel just announced its first-ever diabetic Barbie as part of the 2025 Barbie Fashionistas line, and it’s a big deal for inclusivity.
Hundreds of thousands of children have type 1 diabetes. Now, there’s a Barbie who has it, too https://t.co/GErOMsktzQ

This new Barbie isn’t just wearing a cute outfit (though she is rocking a blue polka-dot dress, a subtle nod to the universal symbol for diabetes awareness). She also comes with tiny but super realistic diabetes tools-a pink continuous glucose monitor (CGM) on her arm and an insulin pump around her waist. Even cooler? Her toy phone has a fake glucose-tracking app, just like the ones used in real life.
This step brings needed representation that can help kids feel seen and understood.

Mattel teamed up with Breakthrough T1D (formerly JDRF) to make sure everything looks and feels accurate. They didn’t just design a doll, they created a teaching moment. Kids living with T1D can finally see a doll that mirrors their experience, and others can learn what managing diabetes looks like day-to-day.
This is such exciting news 🤩 – representation and normalisation really matters 💙
For people living with a health condition – here, #T1D – seeing their own experiences reflected in something as iconic and powerful as Barbie is incredible. It sends a loud, clear message: You… https://t.co/ycY2v31liK— Dan Farrow (@danfarrow9) July 9, 2025
Mattel’s SVP Krista Berger put it best in their press release: “When kids see Barbie reflecting more experiences, it helps them feel seen and accepted.” And honestly, that’s the whole point.
This Barbie isn’t just about play-it’s about awareness, understanding, and letting kids know they’re not alone.
We’re all for it!
