This is a good day for Pakistanis as our talented actors are now beginning to receive local as well as international attention for their work. Canadian-Pakistani actor Ali Kazmi has starred in Pakistani films like “Doobarah Phir Se” and “Baaji” and has also ventured forward into starring in international films like “The Breadwinner” which was produced by Angelina Jolie. His recent film “Funny Boy” was announced to be among the 366 films eligible for the Best Picture award at the 93rd Academy Awards.
The Academy will share the finalized five to ten best picture nominees by March 5th, and voting will be until 10th March. The final nominees will be announced on 15th March.
Ali Kazmi shared the good news on Instagram by posting a screenshot of an article by The Hollywood reporter, and where he shared the good news: “What an honour and what a list to be included in 🙏🏽🎭! My name is right above Mathew McConaughey, so alright alright alright – my job is done 😉 Our film Is available on Netflix and CBC Gem !”
The actor further thanked the people involved in the production of the film like the cast and crew: “Thank you to the amazing creative forces, the super human cast and crew behind it and thank you to The Academy for the recognition! Best of luck to all !”
Funny Boy was directed by Deepa Mehta and also was an adaption of Shyam Selvadurai’s 1994 novel of the same name. It is a coming of age story about Arjie Chelvaratnam, a young Tamil boy in Sri Lanka who is coming to terms with his homosexuality against the backdrop of conflicts between Tamil and Sinhalese people before the breakout of the Sri Lankan Civil War.
