Pakistan’s men’s national football team made history on Wednesday night after beating Afghanistan 2-0 in the Diamond Jubilee International Football Championship held in Male Maldives. This was the first time in over 74 years since the Pakistani men’s football team won an International trophy, the last time being in 1952 when they were joint winners with India in the Asian Quadrangular Football Tournament. In a country where mostly Cricket is considered as the most popular sport, winning a trophy in football, which is mostly dominated by European and South American countries worldwide, is a big deal.
Many government officials, the Pakistani public and especially the Prime Minister of Pakistan, PM Shehbaz Sharif took to twitter to congratulate our Men’s football team on this historic achievement:
Heartiest congratulations to Pakistan’s 🇵🇰 football team on winning the 2026 Diamond Jubilee International Football Tournament in the Maldives. Their impressive victory over Afghanistan in the final has brought pride and joy to the entire nation.
Wishing our talented players…— Shehbaz Sharif (@CMShehbaz) June 11, 2026

For years, some people questioned their Pakistaniyat, called them “ghair mulki”, said they didn’t belong, and dismissed them as good for nothing.
Tonight, those same sons of Pakistan have helped deliver our country’s first proper international football tournament title.

Scoring a bicycle kick in a major international final is the stuff you dream about as a kid. Absolute world-class technique and airtime from our number 11.

Achieved with no league, no infrastructure, and no proper football system people don’t realize how insane this really is https://t.co/feoMxnLWVm

The interesting part is that almost every other country has a proper, renowned football league of their own except Pakistan. The moment Pakistan get their own football league, It will do wonders for Pakistan. Talent will be given a chance, a proper platform to showcase their skills and gain experience. With the Fifa World Cup just around the corner, here’s hoping we see our boys in green perform at the highest stage soon as well, in the next couple of years.
