Police in Lahore have busted a gang trapping young men through social media, blackmailing and extorting money through obscene videos, Express News reported. The Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Operations received intel from one of the victims during an open court session. Acting swiftly on the victim’s account, a special team was created to apprehend the suspects.
The suspects, identified as Misbah, Asad, and Ahmad, were arrested in a swift raid, who have been alleged to be targeting young men from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa(KP) using Facebook. The gang used to record obscene videos of the victims from video call sessions via screen recording. The victims were caught in a semi-nude state in those clips, hence the money was extorted.
During the interrogation, the suspects confessed to their crime and stated that they had been extorting money through fake mobile accounts. The police also recovered data of several victims from the suspects’ devices.
In light of the incident, DIG Operations Faisal Kamran asked citizens to remain cautious when using social media and to avoid sharing personal or sensitive data online. He added that one must not attend video calls from unknown individuals, and if any such incident occurs, the police should be reported immediately. He also announced commendation certificates and cash rewards for the team that successfully arrested the gang.
