Jama Taqseem this week has again brought an important topic to light: how normal it is to expect a victim marry their harasser. Episode 29 opens with Zeeshan(Elahi Bux Khan) falling at Sidra’s(Nazeeha Zainab) feet in hope of an apology.
Zeeshan pleads before Sidra, saying that his fate is in her hands as he places his honour in her feet, yet his plea goes unanswered. Shocked and scared, Sidra does not respond to him and goes into her room with her sister.
Zeeshan then puts his case before Sidra’s mother (Rashida-Amna Malik) and offers to marry Sidra in an attempt to repent for the sin he committed. Stating that his love for Sidra blurred his boundaries, which led to the incident. He further added that he would make Sidra his “honour” through marriage and remain indebted all his life.
Sidra’s silence and her mother’s response leave Zeeshan disappointed as he leaves. Furthermore, when her mother asks Sidra why she hid in their room, Sidra replies that she is still terrified of Zeeshan. She also confronts her mother about her fear, which has led her to marry off Sidra to Ejaz quickly.
Though it is unclear whether Zeeshan and Sidra are set to marry, a debate has begun among netizens who oppose the idea. If they are married at the end, netizens claim the drama serial will be a source of shame, since Jama Taqseem has so far been an advocate of women’s rights and autonomy.
Saying that if this scenario unfolds, it would show that women/children’s bodies are not taken seriously, journalist Sabah Bano Malik posted on X:
