Sher has proved to be not another one of Danish Taimoor’s love stories where the female agency doesn’t hold much weight — rather it has been a story about uplifting women. The drama has had a wonderful run this past few weeks with a strong script holding together the scenes with meaningful dialogues, such that one is hesitant to skip over.
We saw through the drama so many strong women who uplifted each other, others discovering themselves and their rights, and Sher being a male that just does it right by the females in his life.
A man can be an advocate for women empowerment by building their confidence, providing support and building the trust to confide in. Sher did all that for the females in his life. He listened to them, supported them, adviced them but never really forced them to make a decision. He let Marjaan decide what to do when he made the revelation about Ahad. He told her that she had his support no matter what she chose to do. The way he builds her younger sister’s courage about making a decision for herself regarding her marriage ‘mujhe lagta hai tum dono ko apas mein shadi se pehle baat karni chahiye ke tum uske sath apni zindagi guzarna chahti ho ke nahi, zindagi tumhari hai uska faisla karna tumhara ikhtiar hai’.
We see the story of Sher’s mom who sood resilient in the face of adversity when her husband suddenly died and an injured son she had to tend to. She handled the affairs of the house and the business gracefully. We see reperesantation of a strong woman, right there!
Delightfully, the bond between naeema and the barri ami also intrigues us. Despite the nature of their relationship they didn’t let the enmity get the best of them. Rather they stuck together to save their family. They found a way to keep each other happy instead of fighting it out. They brought up the kids together and let each other take the credit where it was due.
Talking of women uplifting each other, the talk Samra has with Taj Bibi despite all their differences is truly something. She believed in the good inside Taj Bibi and started digging it out. Her pure-heartedness led her to help Taj Bibi get a love like hers. She didn’t let Taj Bibis bitterness sway her from trying to get her what she deserves. The conversations between the two have been nothing short of wholesome. The scene where she asks her to end all enmity between them made us shed a tear.
Naeema ‘the barri ammi’ builds their youngest daughter’s trust by telling her that ‘tum hamein itna kam zarf samajhti ho ke hum tum pe yaaqeen nahi karein ge’ giving her a voice of reason and strong will. She also realizes she had been unfair in not supporting her daughters to be independent enough to manage their own affairs and following age-old traditions that destroy lives. She realizes how her decisions led to their problems and now encourages her to take the matters in their own hands as the times have changed for women.
Fajar’s mom also comes to a moment of self-actualization when she talks to his dad about what she’s been going through her whole life. She realizes she’s better off away from this messed up situation where talking to her husband is akin to talking to a wall. She reminisces her mother’s words as she tried to talk her into staying in this relationship “bas tum 10 saal aur intezar karo” but she saw nothing changed for her. She takes a major step for herself as she finally decides to leave with Fajar.
Last but not the least, we’re applauding the commitment Fajar has had towards her career and profession throughout the show. How she juggled with the messy situations and paved her way through them. The strong-willed woman really showed through those moments and we’re glad. Her composure and steady pace at which she wanted things to settle takes real courage but despite all she did not leave that one asset no one could take away from her: her skills and knowledge.
As we pay homage to the moments of triumph for women that really did it for us in the second last episode, we have yet to see what if Fajar and Sher finally make their way together or there’s somethiny else coming up for us in the last mega episode that airs tonight at 8pm! Finger crossed x
