This pot of Biryani starring Khushaal and Ramsha is being served piping hot, with the perfect seasoning of love and emotions, but we can’t deny the presence of illaichi in this delicious concoction. We have just bitten on one while devouring the meal and just can’t get past it. Just, not yet.
Last night’s episode, came with a twist we all could see coming: Meeran’s and Gul Meher’s marriage. IT DID LEAVE US SHOCKED NONETHELESS.
It was going all too good to be true. Nisa was over the moon getting to visit the land of his lover, to go through the corridors of the palace he grew up in, getting to meet his family and sharing a hearty laugh with them over some pure Sindhi cuisine made especially for her and Mamu.
Mamu was having a ball of a time chatting away to his heart’s content with Meeran’s dad like class-divide DOES NOT even exist. We’re big fans of rural Sindhi hospitality, but the white-washing of Feudalism in Sindh really irked us. And the plight of immigrants during 1947 partition is the same as present-day feudal in Pakistan? Pfft, please!
Nisa while spending some time with Haroon discovers the wedding photo of ‘Gul Meher and Meeran’. Trust us, when we say this, but even though we were expecting it, it still came as a shocker!
Nisa’s expressions were a painful mix of devastation and shock. Gul Meher, in her signature style of making everything sound poetic sits down with Nisa to tell her how her Nikkah to Meeran was a result of family pressure and they haven’t even come out of the ‘sibling mode’ yet. She also tries to do some calculations for her which just do not add up. As per her, she was only 4 when Meeran was born and another 4 years later Haroon came in to the world. By this math, if she’s 39 now that makes Haroon 31?! The math is just not mathing here. Unless, she’s making it all up.
Despite her tragic past of forced childhood marriage it wasn’t okay for Gul Meher to lie to Nisa, or to even plan this trip for her before Meeran had disclosed the truth himself. It just is not right for a person to go through something with different expectations so far away from home only to be showed a different reality. One can’t even hit ones own bed for comfort or your mom’s lap to weep in. Just inhumane.
Exceptional performances from both, Khushaal and Ramsha have made the heart-break painful enough to weep on. The pain and anguish could be felt in both the characters as they juggle to reel from this trauma.
This shocker has had fans reliving their past moments. It’s actually quite sad to realize all those moments will be played in flashback now in the drama as both Nisa and Khushaal think of each other.
What we’re also thinking is how is Gul Meher just so perfect? The perfect bahu, the perfect daughter, the perfect wife, the perfect confidant/friend, and the perfect tourism guide. Is there something sinister hidden under this garb of perfectionism?
She says the right thing at the right time but somehow this situation went out of hand on her insistance. Would you say this is in fact exactly what she planned for, since, she herself looks so defeated in love especially when she allowed her husband to have an extra-marital affair?
We might just be reading too much into it and will find out later whether Gul Meher turns out to be a negative character.
But what we’re glad about is that Nisa has a beautiful family to fall back on to reel from this disaster. Her bond with Mamu Jaan is truly envious. The scene where she cries on his shoulder on the way back to Karachi from Meeran’s palace has our hearts. The familial bond of Nisa’s clan is exceptional and true depiction of a middle-class family without any deep dark secrets.
Meeran goes to confront Nisa, but is told to go away. Very sternly. Reason? Self-respect. We do think it was absolutely wrong of Meeran to have kept such a thing from Nisa. It just over-shadows the love and affection he has for her. We won’t be surprised if this is a deal-breaker for her. As with any middle-class family who is living hand-to-mouth, self-respect is their only wealth. She had let her guards down before for the first time, to let the love in. She chose to keep her self intact this time.
We’re left with a gut-wrenching cliff-hanger at the end of last night’s episode the truth of which we shall know come Monday. Till then let’s hope Nisa is not that stupid to do what her family is thinking she has done.
