A curious case of jilted romance in Karachi has left the entire nation scratching their heads when an American woman showed up out of the blue in the city claiming that she was here to reunite with a man she had met and fallen in love with through Facebook. The spectacle has been going on for three days, with many users left in fits over how bizarre the situation kept going. Allow us to breakdown the tea and now where exactly is the pyaar ki kashti going.
It all started on 11 October 2024, when Onija Andrew Robinson arrived in Karachi to meet Nidal Ahmed Memon, a 19 year old boy she had met through Facebook. However, Nidal had called off the wedding because his parents were not ready to accept his marriage to a woman twice his age.
Since then, Onija remained stranded in Karachi even after her visa expired. An NGO provided her with a ticket and financial assistance, but she refused and instead camped outside Nidal’s residence by staying in the apartment’s parking area.
Now, Karachi Times has reported that in a press conference held on 30 January, Onijah has demanded that the Pakistani government give her $2000 dollars and land for the emotional trauma she has suffered due to the heartbreak.
“I’m not talking unless y’all are giving me land and $2000 or more every week,” Onijah said. “I’m getting my Pakistani passport and Pakistani ID.”
And now it also looks like when a door closes, God opens a window somewhere. Because now several Pakistani men have started to come forward and offer to marry Onijah instead of the heartless Nidal. A 62 year old man stepped up and said he was ready to marry Onijah if she was willing to give him $50k.
Ahhh, Karachi wallon may you never change.
The situation has gotten so topsy turvy to the point that even the Governor of Sindh Kamran Tessori has stepped in to comment on the situation, and joked that like the rest of the city, he also wishes to know who is the boy Onijah came all the way to Karachi for.
“Every one in the city wishes to know who is the boy,” quipped Tessori. “This is talent. People who are desperate for the American passport will fly all the way to the other country, while here this boy has an American woman who is out here waiting for him on the footpath.”
Speaking to Samaa TV, the governor revealed that the US Consulate has been kept in touch regarding the matter, and urged the Foreign Office to address the issue urgently.
Currently, Nidal is still missing and now Onijah is staying at a welfare organisation Ramzan Chippa. Speaking in a press conference, the social worker said the woman was suffering from mental health problems, and the organisation had stepped up to provide assistance after seeing her in the streets.
In the conference, Onijah demanded the government give her $100K for real estate, and claimed that she and Nidal would move to Dubai after their marriage.
We can’t say this is the first time social media users were left scratching their heads about what is it that foreign women find so appealing about Pakistani men. In November 2024, a man Shahad Hussain made national news after he married an American woman whom he had met on the popular gaming app, PUB-G.
