Social media users on Instagram and TikTok have begun a movement called #Blockout2024 which is calling for users to block Hollywood celebrities on social media accounts, and stop supporting their brands and music platforms. The outrage follows the growing silence of Hollywood celebrities towards the ongoing genocide in Gaza, where the death toll has now exceeded beyond 40,000 civilians killed, as now Israel has begun bombing Rafah, the last safe zone remaining in Gaza.
The movement rose after the Met Gala which was attended by various celebrities who remained silent during the ongoing genocide, and had raised in a total of $26 million dollars. An Instagram influencer Haleyy Baleyy drew outrage after she posted a clip where she was seen standing behind protestors, and said ‘Let them eat cake’.
This video prompted for TikTok users to begin a ‘digital guillotine’ which called for people to massively unfollow and block those celebrities who remained silent during the ongoing Gaza genocide and to boycott their brands.

Most of the celebrities who are the central targets of the boycott are Zendaya, Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez and the Kardashian sisters. Kim Kardashian attracted outrage when at a recent event she was attending where attendees began calling her out for remaining silent on the ongoing genocide, she responded ‘Free everybody’.

Social media users said the boycott targetted those celebrities like Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez, who held a lot of power and influence in their hands and did not use it to draw attention to the plight of the women and children in Gaza.
